Chiropractic for babies involves SAFE, GENTLE and EFFECTIVE techniques used to relieve common conditions and support optimal function and development of your young one. As natural as pregnancy and birth is, it is also a tough process for both mom and baby. Positions in the womb (cramped space especially towards the end of pregnancy), difficult labour, stress in a mother during pregnancy and birth are only a few reasons for strain on a newborn’s body (muscles, ligaments, fascia, spine and nerves). These subtle strains or tension can result in a difficult time for baby to adjust in their new environment. Specialized techniques for babies (different from adult techniques) help to correct these strains.

At Aston Manor Chiropractors, Dr Michelle has done several postgraduate certifications in Paediatric Chiropractic. Both our Chiropractors use low force and low speed techniques which fall within the guidelines research has shown to be safe in babies. The term Chiropractic or manipulation usually makes one think of the clicking, popping and twisting involved in adult treatment. We do not think of babies as little adults, which is why we don’t just adapt adult techniques for them. We use techniques specifically designed and researched to be safe and effective in infants. There is no popping, clicking or twisting involved (as these techniques have been proven to be harmful for infants).

Here are a few answers to common questions you may have:
Is Chiropractic safe for my baby?

Yes, when performed by a Chiropractor who use low force (pressure) techniques, similar to checking the ripeness of a tomato. The foundation of Chiropractic lies in the principle “first do no harm”. The biggest safety study to date was done in 2019 in Australia by the government agency Safer Care Victoria. This inquiry looked at more than 20,000 responses from members of the public who had accessed chiropractic spinal care for a child under 12 years and over 2,700 Australian healthcare practitioners (excluding Chiropractors). The review found no evidence of serious adverse events associated with chiropractic care for children in Australia. A 2020 comprehensive review of different research papers from various countries noted that most side effects in children under 10 were mild and transient, with serious risks being exceedingly rare.

Are there any risks involved in paediatric chiropractic?

Serious complications are extremely rare. Minor side effects like increased crying/fussiness for a day or two after treatment have been noted but resolve by themselves. Usually, babies find treatment comforting. Correctly trained chiropractors screen and examine all babies thoroughly to ensure no red flags or contra-indications are present. Babies may be uncomfortable during treatment simply because they are in a strange environment, or a stranger is touching them.

What conditions can paediatric chiropractic care help with?
  • Colic: Colic is when a healthy baby cries for a very long time (usually more than 3 hours inconsolably, for no obvious reason) usually first 6 weeks after birth.
  • Breast/Bottle feeding difficulties: difficulty latching, clicking noises when feeding, leaking from mouth, only feeding on one side, crying during feeding
  • Ankyloglossia (Tongue and lip ties, tight oral tissues)
  • Digestive issues (difficulty pooping, reflux, difficulty winding)
  • Muscle and skeletal problems like torticollis (tilted head) or misshapen head (plagiocephaly or brachycephaly)
  • Assistance with reaching developmental milestones like rolling, crawling, sitting, walking

Many parents seek care to support general development or prevent future issues.

Remember in babies it is all about THRIVING not just SURVIVING. We want them to be THE BEST they can be. And of course, help make the process easier on parents.

What are the signs my baby should see a Chiropractor?
  • 1. Feeding difficulties breastfeeding or bottle feeding could indicate neck or jaw tension/dysfunction.
  • • Clicking noises or fluid leaking while feeding
  • • Fussing or crying while feeding
  • • Longer than 30 minutes per feed
  • • Not waking up to feed or falling asleep while feeding
  • • Lower lip does not curl outward while feeding
  • • Nipple feeding (not taking enough of the breast tissue or bottle into their mouths)
  • 2. Fussiness/Colic/Excessive Crying: Colic occurs when there is inconsolable crying or fussiness without obvious physical issues. Colic is often hypersensitivity to the environment. It often occurs in babies who have endured stressful births and is linked to moms with a history of migraine. Colic is incredibly distressing for parents because nothing they do helps to reduce crying. Rest assured; you are not doing poorly as a parent you and your baby may just need a bit of support; we are here to help with that. Multiple studies found that chiropractic care helped reduce crying time.
  • 3. Torticollis/ Head Tilt/Head preference: Torticollis, where a baby consistently tilts their head to one side, can be caused by muscle tightness or joint stiffness in the neck usually due to birth trauma or position in the womb. Chiropractic care may help alleviate this tension and improve range of motion.
  • 4. Limited Range of Motion: If your baby has difficulty turning their head or struggles with tummy time, these could be signs of muscle/fascial tightness or joint stiffness. A chiropractor trained in paediatrics can assess these issues and provide gentle adjustments to restore range of motion
  • 5. Delayed Motor Milestones: If your baby is slow to roll over, sit up, or crawl, it could be related to pain in certain positions, fascial tightness, poor activation of certain muscles or a nervous system not maturing as well as we would like it too.
  • 6. Post-Birth Trauma: Birth can place stress on an infant’s body, especially after a difficult delivery or C-section. Chiropractic care is used to address any spinal or skull issues as well as tightness in muscles, shoulder or hip joints after birth. First time moms, bigger babies 3.5kgs +, twins/triplets, not being in the correct birthing position (turning at the last minute doesn’t count as right position), assisted (forceps/vacuum) deliveries, breech presentations or long labour can predispose babies to body issues after birth.
  • 7. Frequent Ear Infections: Recurrent ear infections may be related to feeding difficulties (remember the canal that drain the ear is short and horizontal not vertical like adults, milk may backflow in the tube causing irritation). Tight neck muscles or fascia may affect drainage as well. We can work in conjunction with conventional medical care to improve outcomes.
  • 8. Sleep Issues: Sleep disturbances in babies, such as difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, might be related to discomfort or tension in the spine or muscles. Gut issues like reflux and excessive gas may also disturb sleep.

Many issues in babies are functional and relate to musculoskeletal problems or nervous system immaturity. They do not come out 100% ready for life on earth, they often need a bit of help so they’re bodies can learn the right way to do things. We are here not just to fix these body issues but also to support parents through the process of figuring out their new bundle of joy.

What techniques are used for infants during chiropractic care?

Chiropractic techniques for babies are VERY different to adult techniques. Techniques for babies DO NOT involve twisting or clicking of joints because they do not have the same body structures as adults. Techniques we use also include gentle releases for tight fascia and muscles. Both our Chiro’s use low force, low speed techniques. Dr Michelle also use gentle skull (cranial) techniques to assist with misshapen heads and feeding difficulties. Also be prepared to get a few homework exercises to do at home with your baby.

How do parents feel about chiropractic care for their children?

Parent satisfaction with paediatric chiropractic care is exceptionally high. In the 2019 independent review by Safer Care Victoria, a government agency in Australia, 99.7% of parents reported a positive experience, and 98% noted improvements in their child's condition following treatment. Such positive feedback highlights the value many families find in this drug-free, non-invasive approach.

What does it mean when a Google search on paediatric Chiropractic shows “lack of evidence”?

To conduct research on babies to see if treatments work or are harmful, scientists will have to knowingly keep helpful treatments from babies or apply treatments that could hurt them -this is unethical and not allowed in research. All medical professions (even paediatricians) struggle to get good research on care for babies because they are so vulnerable. For kiddies we need to use different types of research (other than medical trials) such as questionnaires and case studies from lots of different medical professionals.

How many sessions will my child need?

The number of sessions depends on the condition being treated and your child's individual needs. Some issues may be resolved in a few visits, while others, like developmental or conditions like torticollis and plagiocephaly may require longer care. Also remember we don’t just fix problems; we may also prevent them in some way or just help your baby to be the best they can be. Remember if we can assist your baby to thrive, we may actually prevent difficulties they may have had later in life as toddlers or even adults (how amazing is that!)

From what age can babies see a Chiropractor?

From Day 1 on our wonderful planet. We even assist premature babies.

Is Chiropractic only needed for C-section babies?

Absolutely not! Natural birth and even positions in the womb could contribute to difficulties. Every baby can benefit from Chiropractic in some way.

Chiropractic and conventional medical care should be complimentary to ensure nothing serious is missed but also that we don’t overexpose our little ones to unnecessary medications and procedures. If life in the 2020’s is tough for adults who have had time to learn skills to cope with challenges around them, imagine how tough it is for little ones who still need to develop those skills, can’t move to fix their own problems and can’t even ask for assistance.
