Chiropractic for Babies

What is a Chiropractor? (Chiro)

Chiropractors diagnose and treat conditions affecting muscles, joints and nerves. Paediatric Chiropractors use gentle techniques to assess and treat dysfunction of mainly the spine and nervous system in babies and toddlers.

Babies are not just tiny adults

Babies have unique health problems because their bodies look and function different to that of an adult.

Why should babies see a Chiro?
  • Toward the end of pregnancy the space in the womb gets very cramped as the baby grows bigger and positioning changes
  • The birthing process is physically traumatic for babies
  • In the first 3 months babies have an immature nervous system
  • Growing fast and learning new skills like sitting, crawling and walking is often associated with falls and bumps
  • The nervous system, encased in the spine governs all bodily functions and development
  • All of the above challenges may result in pain and restricted mobility
  • This also affects the function of the nerves originating from the spine which may delay neural integration and development

Does the treatment hurt my baby?

Absolutely NOT.

Chiropractic techniques for infants are completely different to adult techniques.

No clicking or cracking occurs.

The joints and skull bones of babies are made of cartilage (much softer than bone). Baby Chiro's use "eyeball" pressure, similar to the amount of pressure to check if a fruit is ripe.

What conditions do we treat?

Reflux (silent reflux)

Excessive crying, spitting up, arching of the back usually after feeds. Peaks at 4 months.

Colic and tummy cramps

Excessive, inconsolable crying in otherwise healthy baby. Peaks at 6 weeks

Constipation or straining with bowel movements (dyschezia)

After crying for 20 or 30 minutes with straining, the baby may turn red, grunt or scream, and then have a soft poop.

Head shape irregularity (plagiocephaly)

“Chiropractic care may not help EVERY baby, but it will not hurt ANY baby.”
- Dr Joyce Miller

Techniques performed by a skilled Chiropractor at low forces has few side effects.

A study of 1,076 babies having 8,290 treatments resulted in less than 1% experiencing MILD side effects like irritability, soreness or stiffness, all transient and requiring no additional care.

At what age can my baby see a Chiro?

There is no minimum age for treatment. Infants can be seen from the day of their birth.

Even pregnant women often see a chiropractor for help dealing with the pain associated with pregnancy.

Will my baby cry during treatment?

Usually not, but if they do it is NOT because of pain but because they are in an unknown environment and being touched by a stranger.

Any method of delivery is physically traumatic for A BABY.

  • During NATURAL BIRTH the baby is forced through the narrow birth canal
  • Forces up to 340 gram per square centimeter are exerted on the baby during labor
  • This DOUBLES with assisted deliveries (vacuum or forceps)
  • The baby turns and twists through the birth canal to find the easiest way through
  • Skull bones are not fused in infants and move over each other during labor
  • C-SECTION births cause stress hormones to be released in baby
  • The baby is twisted and pulled from a small incision
  • C-section babies' do not undergo the same compression as natural delivery causing less stimulation on the lungs and nervous system

Birth trauma can result in pain, difficulty with feeding, colic and skull deformity.

Chiropractic helps baby with recovery from birth trauma and development.
